We are thrilled to share in Fiona’s joy as she receives her Omeo wheelchair. This moment of achievement not only marks a significant milestone for Fiona but also allows us to explore the world of Assistive Technology (AT) and the positive impact it can have in creating independence and helping individuals like Fiona achieve their goals.
Assistive Technology, often referred to as AT, encompasses a wide range of devices and equipment designed to assist individuals in overcoming challenges. It serves as a valuable tool to enhance quality of life, foster independence, and empower those who require additional support.
When working within the NDIS sector, assistive technology is organised into three categories; low-cost, mid-cost and high-cost AT. Some examples of AT that may fit within these categories are listed below:
Low Cost
Mid Cost
High-Cost
Choosing the right assistive device for yourself or a family member is an important decision. It’s crucial to consult with professionals who can assess your unique needs and recommend the most suitable solutions. Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Continence Nurses, and Assistive Technology Advisors are just a few of the professionals who can offer invaluable guidance in this regard. These experts will take into consideration your individual capabilities, lifestyle, and goals, ensuring that the selected AT enhances your independence and overall wellbeing. Additionally, if you are receiving funding from an external source such as the NDIS, you will need to provide evidence for why a selected device will be beneficial for you.
